Festival Guest African Feature

Official Project Selection: Durban FilmMart, Durban Int. Film Festival 2016

The xenophobic violence that has marred South African life over the last decade is generally reduced to two outbreaks of aggression in 2008 and 2015. However, as this devastating film shows, those two outbreaks are part of a broader pattern of xenophobic violence that is intricately woven into the very fabric of post-apartheid life, and which has been given tacit approval by all levels of government under both Jacob Zuma and Thabo Mbeki. Made over the course of 10 years, with remarkable access to those affected by the violence as well as those who participated in it, this is a deeply disturbing portrait of South Africa as a country. This powerful, moving, and insightful film deserves to achieve as wide an audience as possible.
