The Poets

SA Premiere Festival Guest International Feature

This rambunctious, freewheeling film follows acclaimed West African poets and close friends Syl Cheney-Coker and Niyi Osundare as they travel through their home countries of Sierra Leone and Nigeria, exploring the landscapes, cultures, and histories that have shaped their art and their different approaches to writing. The jousting conversations between these two elder statesmen of African literature are interwoven with their beautifully written poems, as they explore their pasts and talk about the future of the continent. The result is a lyrical testimony to the value of art and friendship, as well as a nuanced and deeply entertaining exploration of the power and urgency of art in the face of political adversity. This idiosyncratic first feature from New York-based filmmaker Chivas DeVinck marks him as a documentary-maker to watch.
